Get Involved! Go abroad and be a volunteer in Nicaragua  

There’s nothing quite like volunteering as a way to experience a culture beyond its attractions and sights and have opportunity to get one-on-one with the local people, learn more about their culture than through a guidebook or tour, and have a positive impact, not a negative one. You should be grateful if you do not belong to a sector that needs someone to light their dying hope. They don’t need all of you but they will be happy sharing even only a part of you. If you settle on volunteer programs there are top things to keep on your mind:

1. Be sure that it will be valuable and satisfying for you.  By this, it is possible for you to make a difference!

2. Your safety counts. You are sure that your safety will be one of the concerns of the volunteer program.

3. Be sure you agree with the rules and regulation of your chosen program. You know the pros and cons of joining to it.

4. Volunteering gives us a chance to fulfill civic responsibility.

5. It will be your chance to give back to your community.

6. Volunteering can only promote personal growth and self esteem if you are really devoted and unto it. You might discover hidden talents that may change your view on your self worth.

7. You are happy seeing and chatting with different people because you will be working with community people and other volunteers. You should be aware about their local customs and expectations, and be sensitive to the requests of your host community. It is up to you if you’re going to dress up the way they dress and behave to meet their expected behavior.

8. You will appreciate the professional experience you will gain on it. You can also test out a career.

9. It is very important to recognize that once you accept a volunteer position, you have to be ready for a commitment.

10. You should be open and patient: things don’t always happen according to plan. Your assignment may fall through; your project may not work; your students may be uninterested; your host family may not speak the same language you speak.

The best way to make the most out of your volunteer program is to be well prepared. E.g. if you are coming to Nicargua, make sure you learn Spanish (you can opt for online Spanish lessons), you have read about the requirements of the program, you understand the rules and regulations, you know the financial conditions. Remember that volunteering is not a choice, it's a responsibility. Don’t expect for payment because volunteers are seldom paid, not because they are worthless, but because they are PRICELESS!
